OK. How many out there are blind/visually impaired and live on their own? Just wondering since my husband and I are always getting comments about how "amazing" we are for doing it all on our own. I KNOW we cannot be such a rare species.

Hello: I am blind or rather

Hello:
I am blind or rather low vision and I live alone. It is "rare" to see someone who lives alone. I actually have been living alone since I was eighteen. But your not alone.

This seems to be one of

This seems to be one of those interesting things people assume about blind people. I live with my fiancee and she's also blind, and we have also been referred to as amazing by various folks. They mean no harm by it, and I personally like to take the whole amazing bit and run with it and make it a private little joke. But people who have never really met a blind person before assume we can't do much and that we have live-in able-bodied/sighted caretakers. So when two blind people live together and take care of just the daily business of getting the food bought and paying the bills and all that domestic stuff, people are amazed because they conclude that if they were blind, they sure would be helpless, so of course, all blind people are the way they imagine they would be. It's an odd way to try and merge fantasy with reality I suppose, but people are funny creatures.
